Axe-Wielding Masked Ex-Con Attempts To Break Into Pennsylvania Home: Police

Just days before Halloween a tenant in Ephrata experienced something seemingly out of a horror movie as their screams were the only thing that helped stop the masked former convict who was using an axe to attempt to break into their apartment, authorities announced on Nov. 28.

Keron Diwilliams Shockley, 30, of Leola formerly of Ephrata, was arrested in connection with the incident on Nov. 17, according to Ephrata police and court documents. 

Shockley, shockingly attempted to use the axe to break through the windows and door of an apartment in the first block of Washington Ave, Ephrata Borough on Oct. 29 around 11:51 a.m., the police detailed in the release. 

"Upon hearing the jarring sound, the occupant of the apartment screamed stopping the intruder’s attempt to access the apartment. Before fleeing the area, the suspect broke an additional window and the windshield of a car with his axe," the police state in the release. 

Witnesses and video helped identify Shockey as the suspect, according to the police.

He has been charged with a felony for Criminal Attempt to Commit Burglary and a misdemeanor for Criminal Mischief - Damage Property, according to his court docket. 

Shockley was released from the Lancaster Prison on $25,000 in Surety Bonds on Nov. 17, court records show. 

His preliminary hearing has been scheduled before Magisterial District Judge Tony S. Russell on Dec. 13 at 9:45 a.m., according to his latest court docket. 

Shockley has previously pleaded guilty to simple assault and prohibited possession of a firearm, and completed his 2 years of probation for the latter charge in June 2022, court documents detail.
